2. BMW F650 GS Dakar (2003)

My trusty daily commuter and weekend warrior. Wimpy oem exhaust, dump it and get a true thumper can. Virtually bullet proof if you keep up with the maintenance. New handlebars area a must if you plan on hitting the dirt. Tried and tested model. So many farkles to choose from.

  8. BMW F700 GS (2014)

Excellent bike for urban riding, camping, and the occasional muddy trail. My only gripe, wish it had the same power as the 800GS. that 10hp difference would be nice to have.

  13. Triumph Tiger 800 XC (2012) Updated

The Triumph Tiger 800XC is a very well made, light, and maneuverable bike. Very easy to handle off road with plenty of umph to hang on the freeway whilst traveling to your off-road destination.

  16. Honda XR650L (2008)

I love this bike. There's a reason Honda hasn't changed much 1993-2015. The seat isn't a sofa, but it doesn't punish you like a dirt bike seat. The stock shenko tires are pretty good all around tires. Accessories are plentiful and inexpensive. Nothing on the bike is going to overly impress you. It's the combination of basic components that work well and reliably.

The one significant weakness is the CDI unit.....they are subject to failure. If you start incurring random electrical glitches, you probably need to buy a new CDI unit $200. This is a known issue and it's unacceptable that Honda has not remedied the situation or provided extended warranty replacements with improved units.

Anyway, the bike is an outstanding value and a comfortable, reliable dualsport.

18. Triumph Tiger 800 XCx (2015) Updated

I can't speak as to comparisons with other XC's but for me the c model just made sense with the WP suspension and special mappings. This thing rails out of the box in a very surprising manner for such a large bike on such silly rubber. Really the only bad point of the bike outside of some of the plastic stuff doesn't impress close up but there are aftermarket alternatives .
I've ridden it 300 miles of 70/30 and so far in that hundred miles of off road I felt darned near as in control as I do on my YZ or XR over the same ride excepting slick clay mud from log trucks and grass.which made kitty want to either roll or take a nap due to the tires. Other than that it is as competent over loose terrain as it is tarmac and it represents a serious attempt by Triumph to upgrade an already successful ADV bike to something better.
UPDATE: 09/27/16..... Still feel this is a great effort on Triumph's part. I'm over 16,000 now and can't see that any other bike in it's class would fit me as well. Just needed a couple hundred bucks in aluminum protective and adaptive stuff and a couple of good tires. Been to 4 states so far and looking to add Canada and Mexico soon.

  19. Suzuki V-Strom 650 (2013)

Disclaimer: This is my first motorcycle, i.e. I don't know what I don't know about what's good bad and ugly about motorcycles. Ahh, ignorance is bliss ...

IMO this bike was very easy to ride from day one and I can't imagine a better starting bike for me (YMMV -- I'm six feet tall and 200 lbs). I don't consider myself to be a natural at anything so the ease with which I took to riding this bike says more about the forgiving nature of the bike than the rider.

The 650 v-twin seems smooth and has always delivered the power I've needed whether on the highway or my limited dirt experience and when loaded with camping gear.

Once offroad or taking my daughters two-up on the bike I definitely notice the stock factory suspension is being pushed. I hope to remedy this in the near future.

All in all, based on my limited riding experience and current needs, I'm very pleased with this bike. It's price point allows me to add and upgrade only what I want to add or upgrade.

Farkles: Barkbusters Storm handguards, Givi 52L Trekker Case, OEM side cases, OEM center stand, Weld86 skid plate

24. BMW R1200 GS Adventure LC (2014) Updated

I love my BMW GS Adv. 'Nuff said. Best fun on two wheels since I had a sport bike. If anything my first thought when I bought it, as I rode away from the dealer, was "So THIS is what I'm missing out on."... Life is just different. And now my ZX10r sits in the garage, a proper race queen, having served me reliably for 27,000 miles... My GSA is not only my daily commute but my escape as well.
