I've been in the market for a pair of waterproof over-pants for quite some time now, with the objective of extending my riding season. Spring time in North Carolina can have some pretty wild temperature fluctuations, with mornings hovering in the low 40's and afternoons up into the 70's! I have been very impressed with all the Scorpion gear that I've used in the past, so I decided to see if they had something that would meet my needs. The Scorpion Trey Pant looked interesting, so I gave them a try.

Product Overview

The Scorpion Trey is a vented pant with a removable "H2O Blok" waterproof liner that is also breathable. The pant features Sas-Tec CE armor in the hips and knees extending about 1/3rd of the way down the shin. Full-length zippers on the outside of the pant (not the inseam) means that your ride stays protected from accidental scratches from the zipper pulls. Speaking of zipper pulls, there are 7 on these pants; two full length side-entry on the legs, two front pockets, two rear pockets, and the fly. The two front pockets are covered in a rubber coating and the rears are covered in nylon fabric making for easy access even with gloves on.

To beat the heat, unzip the liner and you have a fully vented pant. For wet days, zip in the water/wind-proof liner and you're good to go. Note that these pants are not thermally lined. But since they are a true over-pant, you can easily layer up under the pant and still be protected.

Fit and finish is top notch and the pant includes NightViz reflective piping on the lower legs for increased visibility to other drivers.

Performance

I have been wearing these pants paired with a Scorpion Yosemite Jacket every day for the last three weeks, rain or shine. There is plenty of room with jeans or dress pants on underneath.  On one particular day, I had the pleasure to make my 30-40 minute commute in heavy rain with the temperature hovering around 42 degrees (F). Wearing my dress shirt and slacks under this gear, I arrived warm and best of all, completely dry!

The armor on the hips and knees is well placed and doesn't move around at all. There is an accordion expansion panel above the knee that gives plenty of flexibility there to accommodate a variety of riding positions from cruisers to sport bikes.

With the full-length zippers on both the pant and the liner (if installed), getting into and out of the pants is a breeze, even with boots on. Once in, and completely zipped closed, everything stays in place well. The waist includes an adjustable Velcro tab that allows you to adjust the fit up to about 2". Also included on the waist are belt loops if you choose to wear a belt with the pants.

Being a vented, mesh pant, I would say these pants are not suitable for off-road/dual sport use. They are machine washable, but any mud would tend to clog up the mesh venting.

I find the pants very comfortable for both short and long rides, on or off the bike with anything from shorts to jeans to dress pants underneath. With the full length zippers on the legs, getting into and out of them is easy enough to warrant never hitting the road without them.

For reference on size, I am about 5'11", 212lbs., 34" inseam, 34-36" waist with an athletic build. I went with the XL size which fits perfectly over anything from shorts to dress pants or jeans. I didn't need to hem the pants as I prefer a longer length anyway. However, Scorpion designed them with a hemable cuff that can be shortened up to 1".

Bottom-line   professor.gif
If you are looking for a convertible vented-to-waterproof over-pant, particularly if you are a daily commuter on your bike, the Trey Pant from Scorpion is an excellent choice. For less than $200 USD (depending on size), they are an excellent value for the money, 100% waterproof, and with the liner removed, breath very well allowing plenty of air flow through the pant.
