Great ride. Had a 2012 road that I started with and upgraded when I found a deal on a used XC. Larger front wheel and better suspension were huge. That said, the the stock suspension sucks for someone bigger than average. With some upgrades it has been a great dual sport and tourer.

Hepco & Becker tank guards provide protection in case of an accident or fall. Custom designed for each bike to bolt on without drilling. BMW F800GS "Murghab" skid plate When BMW first came out with the F650/700/800GS models it was instantaneously a home run. High quality suspension, Rotax-BMW engineered engine, spoked wheels, best-in-class ground clearance etc. With such features it was no surprise that the "little" GS became the ultimate ADV machine alongside its big brother, the 1200GS. Therefore, Outback Motortek was looking at some serious challanges to match the bike's legendary reputation. As always, our team has done its best create a crown jewel for any BMW F800GS/GSA and proud to present their final creation. We are extremely proud to come up with such features as the embossed ridges on the bottom of our skid plate that provide excellent strenght where its exposed the most: the bottom. Furthermore, it's important to note that these embossed ridges act as gliders to help the bike slide over hard objects with the least resistance. Protecting your engine from being covered in mud is just as important as providing proper cooling for the engine. Therefore, we designed the "Murghab" skid plate to provide sufficient protection from the harsh effects of off-roading yet keep the engine well-ventilated. Read on to find out about all the features of this product. Features: Protects crucial areas of the engine - oil pan, engine case, oil cooler, oil filter and exhaust header! That's a long list of very expensive parts to expose to any sort of damage that will reduce your bikes value in no time. Uniquely designed vent system - Not only unique but very-well thought out. No unnecessary holes were designed on this bash plate. As a result, your engine will less likely to overheat when mud and all sorts of debris from offroading fly at the engine and get stuck between the skid plate and the engine/exhaust header. True offroad and adventure shape - What does that even mean?? It means we have experience in building top-notch bash plates. We avoid designing skid plates that are shaped like boxes, have sharp edges and corners and will guaranteed to restrict your rides off road. Ours are more, to say, aerodynamic and will glide over and gently bounce off any object on your favorite trails. The only known design with ridges on the bottom of the skid plate - Ridges help the skid plate glide over hard objects with the least resistance. Most importantly though, these embossed ridges will REINFORCE the bottom of this bash plate without adding unnecessary weight. 4mm thick laser cut aluminum - Nothing is ever an overkill on an adventure bike, hence we choose to build our bash plates from this ridiculously tough and thick, yet lightweight material. Tough mounting hardware - No cutting corners here (either)! Precision laser cut pieces for perfect fitment using 5mm thick metal mounts. These parts absorb a lot of impacts from riding through (off-road) hell, rather than your bikes chassis or engine that are worth thousands of dollars. Stainless Steel Hardware - These quality bolts and nuts will always and forever look nice and shiny. Unless your bike is covered in mud and dust... Powder coated - if combined with sandblasting, it can be a killer combination to protect your product's surface. No frills and tough just like your ADV/Dual-Sport moto. Sandblasted to achieve the best possible adhesion of the coatings - it's an extremely vital part of our manufacturing process. Sandblasted surfaces will withstand most surface scratches and give you a long-lasting product During the entire manufacturing process quality control is in effect - we pre-fit our products three times during manufacturing, so you only have to do it once. 1.8kg/4lbs Fits most crash bars from other manufacturers. Does NOT fit BMW OEM engine guards.

Prep for adventure with a set of R 1200 GSW Cylinder Head Guards from AltRider. The AltRider cylinder head guards for the BMW R 1200 GS W are designed to protect your cylinder head from the scrapes and scratches that riding off-road often causes. AltRider went to great lengths to engineer a system that distributes load across the entire valve cover. Bolts are anchored both in front of and behind the cylinder head, hits are spread out evenly to minimize the impact force. The cylinder head guards are precision manufactured from 1/8” (3.2 mm) aluminum, and compatible with AltRiderCrash Bars. Each side features a replaceable CNC-machined aluminum skid pad -- allowing you to refresh the guards in the event of a mishap. The inside of the cylinder head guards utilize specially designed rubber pads to isolate them from the valve cover. Provided hardware makes installation a quick and simple job. Available in anodized silver and black. AltRider motorcycle accessories are 100% designed and manufactured in the USA 1/8” (3.2 mm) cylinder head guards prevent scrapes and scratches Rubber bumpers isolate the guards from the valve cover CNC-machined skid pad is replaceable Easy installation Available in silver or black
  7. Dimitri here, the great thread starter It's a little bit chilly here in Colorado with high 20's during the day so we're spending a reasonable time in our garages fixing the bikes and getting ready for the riding season which should be starting in about... *looks at the calendar* 2 months... Until we're on the road, we want to see some fixes, mods, goodies installations, time spent washing the bike, services, tire changes, anything. Here, I'll start: It all started with a post on the GSGiants FB page and this horrific picture: I decided it was time to replace my stock skid plate. So I went on the internetz, googled (when did that become a verb?) black dog cycle works and within a few days, I had a package! Let me start by telling you, the folks at Black Dog Cycle Works have made an EXCEPTIONAL product. But they could have spent a little bit more time writing the instructions... In their defense, I should have spent a little bit more time reading them before I started  So since my space in the garage is limited to non existing (you try to fit 4 bikes and a trailer in a one car garage), I decided the easiest way to work on the bike is to put it on the trailer so it is standing up and I can work under it. So I did. I was actually quite proud of myself! Then I started reading the manual: I guess I should have read the manual first, right? Oh well, off the trailer and back into the garage. Step 1a: Remove the stock skid plate. Easy enough, take 5 bolts out (I have a '14 GSA). Step 1b: Remove all related hardware as well but keep the 4 (four) stock M8x25 bolts. This is what you need to see before starting installing the BDCW hardware: Let's put the two skid plates side by side for comparison... So as I mentioned earlier, I should have spent more time reading the instructions before I started. Therefore, there were several steps I missed. Such as the part that says "move the U-nuts into place AFTER you install the the front mount... This is what I did: Well, the problem is that the tool that the BDCW people were kind enough to provide, will go through the hole but not through the nut... After fixing my mistake, I easily installed the front mount and secured it using the stock M8x25 bolts:
  8. After a hole in our last trip. I'm ready. Bought an ACD "RACING" Skid Plate. Hopefully makes the bike faster. We will be headed out for a little ride from Las Vegas to Jackson, WY for the Dirty Heads concert. Then north to Yellowstone and Teton national parks.

The resilient face of the headlight guard is precision cut from impact-resistant polycarbonate – the same material used in bullet-proof windows. This polycarbonate is formulated with a hardened scratch resistant surface both front and rear. The face attaches to the stainless steel frame with a custom machined aluminum ball and rubber socket connection that provides a sturdy connection free of any vibration. These innovative fasteners make removal of the guard for cleaning a cinch – no tools required. The polycarbonate guard is also interchangeable with all other versions of the AltRider headlight guard. The stainless steel frame of the polycarbonate headlight guard is anchored on all four corners of the headlight to provide a robust foundation to absorb impacts. Unlike other available headlight guards, installation is simple and doesn’t require removal of the blinker stalks or any bodywork. The top is mounted using OEM bolts while the bottom uses provided stainless steel hardware. The metal frame is laser-cut and grain finished. The frame is available in brushed stainless or powdercoat black finish – both are incredibly resistant to rust and weathering. The headlight guard will fit both the halogen and LED headlights. The AltRider polycarbonate headlight guard also includes a specially designed glare guard. This durable vinyl decal attaches to the wind deflector below the windshield. The refined matte finish prevents light from reflecting off the windshield into the riders eyes.

I've been riding for for about 28 years on many different genres of bikes - from dirt, to cruiser, to crotch rocket. I have to say, this bike is by far the best I have had the pleasure of owning and riding. It's versatility, quality, and capability coupled with it's reasonable price point make it a win win!
  11. Picked up an AltRider Rear Brake Master Cylinder Guard for the KTM 1190 Adventure / R , and an AltRider Side Stand Foot for the KTM 1190 Adventure / R today at the EuroMoto 2015 today. Was able to call in and order them ahead of time and have them bring them to the show to avoid shipping. Thanks Altrider! Always a pleasure to deal with. The rear master cylinder guard looks like this... And the side stand foot like this... I didn't get home in time to install them today. But hopefully I'll get a few minutes tomorrow, as I don't think it'll take that long. However I'm throwing a 5th birthday party for my son... So who knows. All that aside, when I get it done, I'll post up some pics and initial thoughts. Then return after some thorough use and review it again. Currently I'm already running their bash plate and rear racks. Suppose I should get some good pics of those as well. So far so good with them. I'll say a little more once I get a couple pics up. If anyone else is running Altrider kit and would like to contribute, by all means, jump in and get after it! *Just to clarify, I have zero afiliation with Altrider other than enjoying they're hard parts and 2013 and 2014 Hoh rallies.

We have more experience with the “heat sync-style” oil cooler than we care to admit. Many riders don’t understand how truely prone to damage these fragile components are. This component utilizes engine coolant to cool the engine oil—but with wafer thinalternating layers intended to separate oil and coolant! I′m sure we don’t have to tell you how important it is for the health of your motor to keep these two fluids SEPARATE. Taking an impact from a small rock can easily result in enough to damage to mix the coolant with the oil. NEVER A GOOD IDEA! Added protection, lightweight design and cost effective—defintely a no brainer in our book!

I love my BMW GS Adv. 'Nuff said. Best fun on two wheels since I had a sport bike. If anything my first thought when I bought it, as I rode away from the dealer, was "So THIS is what I'm missing out on."... Life is just different. And now my ZX10r sits in the garage, a proper race queen, having served me reliably for 27,000 miles... My GSA is not only my daily commute but my escape as well.
  16. I saw a similar video for the Tenere 660 and since that bike isn't sold in the US and the GS/GSA is and have sold quite a few, I thought I'd do a similar video. The things I go over in this video really apply to just about any adventure bike. The key issue here for a lot of riders is what exactly do I need to do to my bike to outfit it for off-road riding? When I started out I had absolutely no clue and unfortunately wasted some time and even more money figuring all this out. I figure I can use my experience to save you money I have to say though that I honestly didn't know how much I'd enjoy riding my bike off-road when I first bought it. I figured it was just a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. However, these bikes don't exactly come dirt-ready off the showroom floor. There are some things you should do right away, some things before others given their importance and of course some things you really don't need to do. We've all seen that shiny sparkly bike at Starbucks all farkled up and you just know that thing has never seen anything more adventurous than a gutter in front of its driveway. Don't be that guy! The other thread here "Post your gear questions here" is more for the apparel side. This is the bike part of that same set of questions. I know it's long but if you're new to adventure riding or an experienced rider looking to explore more dirt, I think you'll find it helpful.

A rock thrown up into your bike's radiator from another vehicle or motorcycle can be a trip ending event if you don't have the proper protection. The Touratech stainless steel radiator guards will protect your vulnerable radiators from impacts that can damage one of the most vital components of your bike's engine. These stainless guards are laser cut to exacting standards and feature louvered fins with air-flow ports that have been engineered to deliver the maximum volume of air to the cooling system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?x-yt-cl=84359240&v=OrDDG5ZyeEs&x-yt-ts=1421782837

Upper Crash Bars - BMW R1200GS Water Cooled A cracked plastic fairing or leaking radiator, after a simple tip-over, can put a dent in your pride and your wallet. Protect your BMW R1200GS Water Boxer by adding Touratech Upper Crash Bars to your OEM BMW or Touratech engine crash bars. A vital component of the liquid-cooled boxer engine is its radiator, and while BMW did a good job of keeping it tucked-in and out of the way, the bottom corners are still vulnerable and can become a liability on a long adventure. Touratech Upper Crash Bars keep your radiator protected during a tip-over and also prevent damage to expensive body and fairing pieces on your water-cooled BMW R1200GS. Made of strong 1-inch diameter stainless steel tubing, these bars are tough and also contribute the adventure aesthetic of this capable machine. Unlike other designs, Touratech crash bars compliment the overall look of the by following the lines of the stylish R1200GS. The Touratech Upper Crash Bar System is quick and easy to install, and also provides a solid location for mounting lights. They are fully compatible with BMW OEM crash bars, Touratech engine crash bars, and Touratech LED auxiliary lights. If you have BMW OEM LED lights installed, you will need to purchase our adapters (045-5200) to mount the lights to the upper crash bars. > Made of 25mm diameter, 2mm wall thickness stainless steel tubing > Protects the expensive upper fairing and vulnerable radiator > Fits with either BMW OEM or Touratech crash bars > Stainless steel bars will not rust > Available in electo-polished stainless steel (silver) or epoxy-coated (black) finishes > All hardware included for easy installation > Accents the styling lines of the R1200GS > Fits BMW R1200GS Water Cooled models, 2013-on > NOT compatible with BMW OEM auxiliary lights. > Made in Germany by Touratech

These robust, 2-part crash bars are made of electropolished special steel. Effectively protects cylinders and heads from damage in minor tip overs. Enduro style matches the look of the R1200GS. Weight: approx. 9 lbs. Note: Does NOT fit 2005-13 (air/oil-cooled) R1200GS.

Dings, scratches, scrapes, or even a cracked valve cover can all be results of a simple tipover on the liquid cooled R1200GS. With its wide boxer-style engine, the valve covers hit the ground when the bike goes over. Touratech aluminum cylinder head guards offer lightweight and low-profile protection for your BMW's engine.
