this just might be the sweet spot between a 550 pound ADV and a gutless KLR. I have owned both.

Amazing machine. I've noticed its not as high quality as a BMW but its definitely built for my riding style. KTM has come short on my deal and hasn't activated KTM my ride, hill assist, quick shift, or heated grips. They don't know how to make these options work. It's been a month sense I bought the bike and I haven't got to fully use my bike yet.

Saying that I am in love with this bike would be an understatement. Out of all the motorcycles I have owned throughout the years, the 1290 SA has been my favorite. ur new multi-function rear rack is a great compliment to the versatility of the KTM 950/990 Adventure motorcycles (all years). These stout plates are made of 1/4″ aluminum with generously sized holes around the perimeter for tie down points. Our standard rack measures approximately 12″ deep by 12″ wide. This size is compatible with all known SADDLEBAG luggage systems including KTM, Touratech, Hepco-Becker, Jesse, Happy Trails, SW-Motech and Micatech. This rack is NOT designed to carry a top box. The “multi-function” part of the equation comes from the ability to mount the RotopaX carriers for 1 or 2 gallon fuel or water containers, as well as the compatibity with our winch support plate (ordered separately) to carry your WARN XT17 or RT15 electric winches. The optional winch support plate is made of steel and mounts between the frame of the bike and the rear rack, offering plenty of support for the winch as well as some room for additional luggage. Serious adventure riders are quickly seeing the benefit of carrying these lightweight electric winches in recovering a bike off the beaten trail, or simply navigating around an obstacle which would otherwise require a “U-turn” to seek an alternate route. The production rear racks will be anodized black with our logo tastefully laser etched. Uses stock hardware.
  5. Black Dog Cycle Works is helping us out with some pegs, skid plate, side stand relocation kit and some Hepco & Becker pannier racks. I can't imagine this bike without any other plate, given this is kind of where BDCW make their initial mark in the industry. BDCW is run by Kurt and Martha Forget, two fine people who live in Idaho when it's warm and Baja when it's cold This video from The Ride of My Life is really a great intro into who they are and what they're all about My experience with them began after my initial aftermarket skid plate failed on me. For the oilhead GS/GSA, there really is no better skid plate out there, and BDCW makes plates for quite a few more bikes as well that are just as solid. But that's not where it ends... BDCW does much more. Their pegs are second to none - big, light and what they call "power steering for your bike." There's even a built-in bottle opener on the bottom! I ended up getting my Rigid D2 led lights from them with a great connector solution for my bike, as well as these proprietary bar clamps that put the lights in an ideal spot for visibility and being out of the way should the bike tip over. You'll also find other protection items, luggage solutions (mounts, plates, soft and hard bags, etc...). Here are some money shots of what we have so far... We NOW offer a 5-Year Warranty on the Bracket! If you somehow manage to break the bracket, we will replace it.* It continues to amaze us how many KTM 950/990 riders are not aware of the design flaw with the side stand bolt directly to the engine case on these bikes. This is the single most important mod you can do to your bike!! We feel, and MANY customers agree, our relocation kit is simply the BEST design that addresses this issue (it bolts the side stand directly to the engine case which can result in a cracked case if the side stand is contacted). Our design eliminates this connection to the engine case and uses a 1/4″ aluminum bracket to secure the side stand, which then bolts to the center stand and skid plate frame. The advantages of this design over others that are available elsewhere are simple: Easy to install with four bolts Keeps the side stand in the stock location You don’t have to disassemble the side stand safety switch Compatible with center stand The look is seamless to the bike Helps avoid a potential long walk home or VERY expensive repair bill Compatible with the Black Dog skid plates for both the Adventure and Super Enduro Simple. Plus, it looks good as it is anodized black with our BDCW logo tastefully etched into it. Yes, we still recommend this product with our rugged skid plate! It is cheap insurance from a $4,500 broken case! FITMENT: KTM 950 Adventure (standard / R/ S) - manufactured in 2005 or after (check the tag on the headstock on the bike - do NOT go by the model year) KTM 990 Adventure (standard / R/ S) - All Years KTM 950 Super Enduro - All Years KTM Adventure 950 - manufactured in 2003-2004 (can be used with modification - See instructions here) PRODUCT NOTES: If you are NOT running a center stand on your 950/990, we offer a spacer that is used to fill the gap that is normally taken up by the center stand. Please see “related items” below to purchase this spacer. Installing the side stand relocation kit on applications that do not use a centerstand will void the warranty on the kit. Installation instructions for BDCW Side Stand Relocation Kit Not a direct bolt-on for Adventure models MANUFACTURED in 2003 or 2004. Please check your bikes DATE OF MANUFACTURE, do not go by the year on the title. See instructions here. Modifying the bracket is not a viable option. KTM Rally Footpegs: Due to the fact that this relocation bracket moves the side stand assembly outward from the frame, it has been reported that there may be some interference between the side stand spring and shifter when using the KTM Rally Footpegs. It will be necessary to grind some material off the shifter to minimize this interference. Does NOT fit the 950SM, 990SM-T or 990 Super Duke. *Warranty does not cover any damage to the motorcycle itself or the cost of shipping.
  7. I figured now we have a bike, I'd put this thread here. What we have is a 2011 KTM 990 Adventure with just 3,000 miles! It's very clean and has never even been off road before. We hope to change that! My objective is to have a bike we can bring to all our regional events that can showcase some of the best the after market vendor world has to offer. It's purpose is to become a basis of discussion as to how these things make a difference in our riding. One of the reasons I picked a 990 is primarily because we couldn't get a new bike donated! It's also because there are a lot of people making stuff for the 990 and it has a lot of good real estate on which to put custom graphics wrap on. Besides, the 990 also happens to be a great bike in the dirt. It's also important to note here that none of this stuff is "free" that we're getting just because XLADV is so awesome. This bike came out of my pocket and most of the aftermarket parts are being provided at simply a discount. I'm happy to showcase these products and put sponsors' logos on the bike for their efforts. That's one thing I wanted XLADV to stand out for and that's a solid partnership with the v

New design provides increased legroom and a lower center of gravity when standing by lowering the footpegs by 1/2"! Features and benefits: LOWERED 1/2" for increased legroom Made from a very tough aircraft alloy. Measures 2.5″ wide x 4.5″ long. Weigh only 8 oz. each. Traction cleats around perimeter of peg. Enlarged size greatly improves control of bike—like adding power steering! Greater comfort when standing. Built in bottle opener on each peg. “They are NICE. Lots of grip, and no more fumbling around to find the peg with my arch while catching the brake at the same time. The added surface area gives you more options for foot placement too. The Comfort on my feet/solid HUGE platform to stand on was awesome! Thanks again. Great product—worth the wait.”—David Lena, VT

We have more experience with the “heat sync-style” oil cooler than we care to admit. Many riders don’t understand how truely prone to damage these fragile components are. This component utilizes engine coolant to cool the engine oil—but with wafer thinalternating layers intended to separate oil and coolant! I′m sure we don’t have to tell you how important it is for the health of your motor to keep these two fluids SEPARATE. Taking an impact from a small rock can easily result in enough to damage to mix the coolant with the oil. NEVER A GOOD IDEA! Added protection, lightweight design and cost effective—defintely a no brainer in our book!

This is a pair of CNC machined bits of black anodized aluminum designed to mount a 6" rigid "bar" light just above your front fender, via the forks. http://blackdogcw.com/black-dog-shop/bike/bmw-r1200gs-lc/bdcw-premium-fork-light-kit-for-bmw-r1200gs-gsa-liquid-cooled-detail.html First off, let me say about the rigid light unit, go with "fog/wide": pattern, or "spot/narrow" pattern. The "hybrid" pattern is the bastard of the lineup. The 2 outer LED's on each side are "fog/wide", and on the 2 CENTER are "spot/narrow" They should sell this as a "fog+" rather than "hybrid", as the "spot/narrow" function is anemic and the "fog/wide" pattern dominates. Okay, enough of that. The BDCW mounts are sexy. If you don't think aluminum can be sexy, you haven't seen these. They are works of art. Each side separates into 2 pieces to make it easy to mount them on the forks, and then easy to get the Rigid 6" light in between. The BDCW product doesn't come with any instructions for mounting other than how to assemble the 2 halves(marked LEFT and RIGHT). Fitment of the mounts on the forks is "trial and error". The mounts need to be adjusted to clear the plastic radiator shrouds at full turn lock, but not so high that the light/beam pattern is compromised by the "beak". BDCW should provide better documentation, ideally with measurements, to make this easier. I'll add some more photos in a few days.
  12. The solution for carrying more cargo on BMW adventure bikes Sandpoint, ID, December 18, 2015 - Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW) announces their new BDCW Pillion Rack for BMW R1200GS and GSA Liquid-Cooled motorcycles. For solo adventure riders, a great solution for carrying more cargo is to replace the passenger seat with an integrated rack. BDCW's new rack puts the additional weight immediately behind the rider where motorcycles were originally designed to carry it, making it the ideal location. By moving the weight forward from the rear of the bike, riders should expect greatly improved balance and control. The BDCW Pillion Rack is a highly functional, rugged yet beautifully-machined product that greatly increases the carrying capacity of the Big GS. And, it works especially well with the BDCW Multi-Function Rear Rack for the GSLC or GSA-LC, but is compatible with most rear racks from other manufacturers, as well as the factory grab rails on the standard GS and GSA. Avid adventure riders will appreciate how the BDCW Pillion Rack mounts to their bikes. "Unlike other versions on the market, we intentionally engineered our rack so that it doesn't use the mostly plastic stock keyed release system. We found that the stock release doesn't take to the off-road punishment many of our customers give their bikes. Ours bolts directly to the frame." says Kurt Forgét of BDCW. The BDCW design has several notably unique features and benefits: A great compliment for the BDCW Multi-Function Rear Rack for either the GS-LC or GSA-LC Made of industrial grade gauge 1/4" aluminum Bolts to the frame for solid mounting-designed to take a beating while securely hauling gear Quick and easy removal with four bolts to replace the passenger seat Generous-sized perimeter holes give multiple tie-down points for gear Compatible with the factory grab rails for both the standard GS and the GSA. Anodized hard black for a durable finish Spacers and stainless steel hardware provided Approximately 12" wide x 14" long Designed, tested and manufactured in the U.S.A. MSRP: $195.00
  13. NEW KTM Throttle Control Outperforms the Rest Another innovative design from the folks at Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW) Sandpoint, ID, October 29, 2014 -- Black Dog Cycle Works' new Throttle Control was created to save riders from wrist cramping and fatigue on long pavement hauls between their off-road adventures. Further, "We designed our Throttle Control to be extremely rugged and user-friendly so it'll hold up to the heavy pounding and battering KTM adventure bikes endure," says Kurt Forgét of BDCW. Early product testers claim that the BDCW Throttle Control is easy-to-install and out performs all other designs they've used. A unique click on/off feature provides positive feel and positioning-taking the guesswork out of setting the proper drag. The design allows the rider to increase/decrease speeds without disengaging the device, as well as easily overridden for emergency situations. Riders who experience the often debilitating wrist pain associated with manually holding the throttle open for long periods will appreciate BDCW's new device. And, without having to fight the throttle 100% of the time, extended slab rides will be far more enjoyable. Available exclusively from Black Dog Cycle Works. Compatible with: KTM 1190 Adventure, 990 Adventure, 950 Adventure, 950 Super Enduro and 690 Enduro Stock grips and hand guards KTM heated grips Flexx handlebars Plus, MANY other motorcycles with dirt bike style handlebars About Black Dog Cycle Works (BDCW) BDCW is internationally known for their ULTIMATE armor skid plates and "Platform" footpegs for big adventure motorcycles. Improved in all areas of performance and handling ..... Except - the combination of the lighter flywheel/crankshaft and wet clutch is going to take a looooong time to get used to.
