  1. I was at the KTM Rally a few weeks ago and snapped a pic of a new set of tires they are releasing for distribution soon, the Motoz "Tractionator Adventure" series (70/30; tubeless). This one pic alone got a reach of something like 17,000 on Facebook! I'm happy to announce that I'll be testing a set of these shortly on the XLADV project 990. I've seen their Tractionator Desert H/T tire and it is IMPRESSIVE! These are 100% natural rubber tires and are built to LAST longer and keep their grip even when worn down. Motoz is pronounced "moat-oz" with the "oz" referring to Australia, where the company is located. The tires are manufactured in Thailand, which is the #1 supplier of natural rubber. Got news today that Motoz has yet another new adventure tire they are releasing Spring '16 and can be seen next week at AIMExpo, booth #613. All I've been told is that it's a 50/50 tire and is also tubeless (can also take a tube if you like); also that 17" rears will also be available in 2016.   2. What is the deal with this tire from Shinko? I've been seeing more and more of it lately with lots of good reports. I checked the reviews at Revzilla and it's rated 4.9/5.0 with 27 ratings! I only heard one bad report from a guy whose name I can't recall down in San Diego who is a helicopter pilot; he said the rear tends to hop and skip around in gravel. But then Brent Smith just ran them on his 990ADV up to Idaho and back to Park City and he loves them. As to price, an 805 rear in 150/70/18 (my size) is just $141.76. But what I found really interesting was last night on Instagram, whoever manages the Shinko account for Australia chimed in with this: The continental is built in the same factory as the 805. They share the same carcass construction, same rubber compound and a slightly different tread pattern.     MOTOZ designed them to get you anywhere on the globe and back home again. Long mileage, serious traction and smooth transition from pavement to gravel to dirt, the GPS does it all well. MOTOZ Tractionator GPS Tire is reversible to suit the rider’s needs – either 50/50 or Mostly Off Road. In 50/50 direction the GPS is a well behaved street-able tire with smooth cornering transition from centre to cranked all the way over. In Mostly Off Road direction the aggressive straight line hook up and cornering drive is engaged. Furthermore, it’s technically 25% stronger than many other adventure tires. They also feature deeper tread than most adventure tires. And the unique compound results in longer mileage. In conclusion, the Tractionator GPS means dependable traction in a wide variety of conditions.
  5. I figured now we have a bike, I'd put this thread here. What we have is a 2011 KTM 990 Adventure with just 3,000 miles! It's very clean and has never even been off road before. We hope to change that! My objective is to have a bike we can bring to all our regional events that can showcase some of the best the after market vendor world has to offer. It's purpose is to become a basis of discussion as to how these things make a difference in our riding. One of the reasons I picked a 990 is primarily because we couldn't get a new bike donated! It's also because there are a lot of people making stuff for the 990 and it has a lot of good real estate on which to put custom graphics wrap on. Besides, the 990 also happens to be a great bike in the dirt. It's also important to note here that none of this stuff is "free" that we're getting just because XLADV is so awesome. Motorcycle Tire Pump Comparo: The Top 7 Pumps for Your XLADV Motorcycle Portable air compressors have come a long way and now there are quite a few that are purpose-built just for us motorcyclists. Some have even been purpose-built for XLADV motorcycles as you're about to see. Thankfully we have a plethora of products to choose from and I'd say perhaps too many given some out there are obvious ripoffs of earlier innovators' designs. I've left those pumps out on purpose so if you see it here, you'll know you're likely to get an original and be supporting real XLADV motorcycle riders. I did learn quite a bit from some of the makers of these pumps so let me give you the 411: Yes most components are made in China but they've come a long way and are the best you'll find. Many are still assembled here in the US and are American small businesses you can trust. Most any pump will have heat issues. They're great for your own bike but most require a cool down period before you start to inflate a second tire. Most any pump is going to trip BMW's canbus system and will require a hard wiring to the battery for best results. They start fine but will trip once the pump is under load. A lot of the lower priced pumps work great but have shown poor reliability and are prone to breaking if dropped on a hard surface. All these pumps should be kept out of the dirt. A best practice is to hang off a peg or place on a mat or case the pump comes in. All will inflate your tire to about 40 psi in about 6-9 minutes. I can't really say which is the best pump out there; that's something you're going to have to figure out for yourself. But, I did think it would be fun to break these pumps down into sub-segments for a few well known ADV archetypes: The Starbucks Rider, The Hardcore ADV-Enduro Rider, and The Budget Conscious Rider. The Starbucks Rider You strike quite the figure in that genuine whale foreskin suit and that $30k top of the line behemoth XXLADV bike as you sip your latte and give knowing winks and finger-guns at your local coffee shop. Okay, so that's a bit over the top. Just a bit of fun! This type of rider really doesn't mind what a pump costs; they just want the best and will go with what they saw someone else have in their aluminum box style panniers. CyclePump from BestRest Products - $115.00 The CyclePump seems to be a popular pump ("30,000+ sold") and at $115 it's the most expensive in this comparison. I had a first generation version of this pump and did not have a good experience with it. But to their credit, they've continuously improved their product with a new chuck design, new housing mounts, subtle improvements in the compressor, and now rubber armored end caps. Despite the high price point, this pump does not come with a light or pressure gauge and is the heaviest and largest pump (XXLADV) in this comparison. (photo by Noah Horak; used w/permission) The Hardcore ADV Enduro Rider This rider is going purely on function and will spend a dollar if it means they're ensured of reliability when it counts. They don't care about plastic housing or maybe lights or gauges; they just need something that's purpose-built and going to work when they need it to. ADV Designs Micro Tire Pump - $79.99 The Micro Tire Pump is the product that started it all for ADV Designs. They set out to build the best motorcycle pump and tested many of the cheaper pumps finding that 50% of them failed! They found the best compressor motor available (used by a few others as well) and went for a function over form approach. Sure, it may look like it's from the former Soviet bloc but it's very popular and works well. They also won Overland's editor's choice for best value back in '08 and comes with a 1 year warranty. Motopumps Mini Pro Inflator - $69.99 Motopumps is another product created by a motorcyclist frustrated by three flats in 6 weeks costing him $380 in towing! He saw there weren't any good motorcycle pumps out there and set out to make his own; also using the best components: campbell pump; teflon coated pistons; metal gears; high air flow and more efficient (more air/less amp draw). The Mini Pro also comes with a 5 year warranty! They have a new Air Shot pump ($59.95) that is even smaller and lighter. The Budget Conscious Rider This rider is more likely to have a milk crate top box and a homemade camp stove made from an aluminum can. They get the most adventure value out of their dollar not because they are "cheap" but because they derive satisfaction out of seeing what they can accomplish for the absolute lowest amount of money. This rider's pump is going to be very affordable as well as very small and not necessarily have all the bells and whistles. Stop N Go Mini Air Compressor $36.95 I've seen many of these pumps out there and they seem to get the job done very well. It's made from heat resistant plastic that is claimed to not overheat. What's cool is even at a low end price it still comes with a built-in gauge and led light! Slime Power Sport - $30.10 This may be the most ubiquitous pump as it seems to be everywhere. Lots of people have it, but it's known to be a bit fragile to dropping and is also known to overheat and require a 20 minute cool down cycle after 9 minutes of use. Antigravity Micro-Start Tire Inflator - $24.99 I happen to have used this little guy (the smallest and lightest) for two years now with no trouble at all. Like the Stop N Go, it also comes with a built-in gauge and led light. It also works with my Micro-Start XP10 battery as well! AirMan Tour - $25.95 The AirMan is another one you tend to see a lot of motorcyclists carry. I like the built in gauge as well as a deflate button. Decision Time! GoldenTyre is an Italian brand that's very successful in Enduro (the whole RedBull Romaniacs podium used GT tires, and also lots of wins at Erzberg) and is putting out some very interesting Adventure tires. I recently put a set of GT201 tires on my 1190 Adv R and I'm quite happy with them.   9. Stock rear Scorpion at about 10k is on it's last leg...with the other foot on a banana peel. I have a new Shinko in the garage...but I'm poor, in debt and cheap....can I push it a few hundred more miles of freeway commuting? Be gentle...my 04 KTM 950 ADV has been a VERY expensive girlfriend. Looking forward to better/chunkier rubber but if I can I want to stretch this as far as is remotely safe to do.
  10. Um... I don't get this article from ADVMoto on "5 Hot 50/50 Adventure Tires." I wouldn't call any of them 50/50 and they left out at least three I would call 50/50 tires (K60, E07, Tractionator GPS). Motoz Tractionator Adventure: 70/30 dirt/street Michelin Anakee Wild: is marketed as 50/50 but we all know it's at least 60/40 and they said a year ago it was a 70/30 tire Mitas E10: 60/40 Shinko 804/805: 60/40 Vee Rubber VRM-401: 60/40
  11. Who's mixing what tire brands/models front and back? I know this is common for enduro dirt bike riders, but how about when you spend 50-60% of your time on the street? Any issues to consider there? What are your experiences in the quest to find good street manners and solid off-road traction? What witches brew combos have you tried that worked out well?
  12. My favorite slow-talker Adam Riemann talks about having the right tires on your adventure bike. Could not agree more. I've never been the type of rider who is willing to trade performance for longevity or brag what I can do with street tires off road. Conversely, I do not mind going slower on the pavement because the dirt is what I'm really after. I can always change tires if I want to have a road-only ride. Having the appropriate tire off road is about SAFETY. No sense in finding yourself in the middle of nowhere with a tire that won't get you where you want to go. I first heard this from Jimmy Lewis and it's nice to see Adam repeat sage advice. As to these Pirelli Scorpion Rally tires, I tried a rear once and really liked it but for some reason they aren't that common here in the States. Adam is sponsored by Pirelli and I've also seen a lot of Mitas (Chris Birch) and Motoz down under.
  13. Everyone likes a tire thread, huh? I saw these new tires from Michelin a few years ago and they've finally made it to the US. Dimitrios did a review already you should check out but what's interesting is he reports something like 9,000 miles on his rear tire (and still going?). I heard elsewhere reports of 6,000 miles, 7,000 miles and another that said "expect double the life of a TKC-80." What's interesting is a guy today on Facebook's "BMW R1200 GS Adventure (motorcycle)" page claims to have only gotten 1,000 miles so far and "the rear is about half done... I think 2k is going to be the limit." I spoke to another guy who tested these and he's not willing to go on the record yet but his feedback was "love the tires but they don't last as long as I thought." I don't doubt Michelin makes a great tire either but I'm wondering how many real life riders are going to see such high mileage numbers? What I'd love to see is some more reviews from you riders on what your experience is? I'm about done with my second set of the Vee Rubber VRM 401's so maybe I'll order a set of the new Anakee Wild's and tell you for myself.
