  1. Hi to the Easterners - while you're contemplating how cold a "Polar Vortex" can get, and motorcycling is a distant memory, here's a puzzle for you! What's the "most fun you can have on two wheels"? HUMM is the answer, and we're very pleased to announce that the 1st USA HUMM will be held in Green Ridge State Forest in the Appalachian Mountains of Maryland from Aug 11-13! "Ranks among the top ten 'best fun' biking experiences!" This is also the first HUMM in eastern North America, so for all you Canucks who have been looking enviously at the HUMMs in BC, here's your chance to get in on the action, less than a day's ride from Toronto! Take advantage of early bird rates until Jan 31, book your holidays and start getting your team together! For all the details and to register, start here: www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/humm-appalachians-2017 What's a HUMM? Check out the HUMM Video for a taster! Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness (HUMM) Appalachians is a unique 2 day, off-road motorcycle orienteering/geo-caching event for teams of 2-4 bikes. Unleash your competitive instincts and sharpen your navigation skills in your choice of compass or GPS categories (no waypoints provided!) Whether you're new to off-road riding or a trail ninja, HUMMs let you and your team choose your adventure... it IS a navigation challenge, after all. How does it work? All teams get the same maps and a HUMM Points Book on Day 1. Checkpoint values are based on distance and degree of difficulty. Each checkpoint gets its own page with key info about its location - your team figures out how to get there and which ones to aim for, because you can't get to all of them! Every team has a different strategy, so there is no set course. You're never following a string of riders down the same dusty trail! What's a suitable bike? Bikes need not be dedicated off-road specials but need to have a vague predilection for the dirt. So GS Adventure yes, Electric Glide in Blue, no. Knobby tires a plus but by no means essential. All bikes must be fully street-legal. "Put this on your 'must do' list!" Why a HUMM? 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Team Members in each class get a keeper Trophy! How cool is that! We are fully official with all local and state authorities, so no aggro for riders on the trails or the roads. Support services - Each team will have a Spot satellite tracker supplied for the event. If you need help, we'll come and get you. Our locally based support and recovery service can provide first aid and transport to the nearest suitable facility as well as basic field repairs and motorcycle recovery. This service is provided on a 'best efforts' basis. Each team gets a custom map and points book to keep. An exclusive, sweat-wicking HUMM technical t-shirt. Awards Dinner on the final evening is included in your registration fee. Did I mention keeper trophies? ;-) "Had a blast at the HUMM, and looking forward to next year." Activities for non-riders There's also plenty on offer for non-riding spouses or partners. Rocky Gap Casino Resort, the hotel for the venue, boasts a spa, a pool, a fitness center, an 18-hole golf course, five onsite restaurants and of course, a 24-hour casino! It's on a lake, so fishing and kayaking are also possible. The area features a wide variety of activities and attractions such as Rocky Gap State Park, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, and many cultural and culinary experiences. Sign me up! Online registration for this event is now open, with super early bird rates until January 31, so book your holidays and start getting your team together! For all the details and to register, start here: www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/humm-appalachians-2017 Hope to see you at the HUMM! Grant & Susan Horizons Unlimited Inspiring, informing and connecting travellers since 1997 Alain Kaldewaay, Xplor-Int Event Partner, HUMM Appalachians 2017 P.S. Please forward this e-mail to your friends (if you aren't afraid of competition! ;-) Best wishes for a happy, healthy and adventurous 2017! Hope to see you at an HU event, or on the road someday, somewhere...
