Administrators Eric Hall Posted June 21, 2016 Administrators My Rides (3) Report Share Posted June 21, 2016 So some background on why this version of the bike is so historic... I was farting around Santa Barbara one day a few years ago ('12 or '13) and walked into the Ducati dealership there to check out the bikes. I saw this one near the window with a racing number on it. The salesman asked if he could help me and I said "no thanks I'm just looking" but then once the ice was broken I asked about the bike with the number in the window. He said "oh that's the bike that our guy won the Pikes Peak race with. It was his first time too and the bike is just a floor model MS 1200 with minimal mods like exhaust, tires and fuel mapping." "Pikes Peak? Like the race? The one in Colorado? He won that race? Like in the noob class" I asked? "Nope the real Pikes Peak. He won it." he said. "His first time?!" I asked? "Yep. Why don't you ask him yourself... hey Carlin, come tell this guy about your race..." he said as he motioned at Carlin to come over for a second. I was utterly blown away not only that they won the race on basically a bone-stock floor model bike but that this guy who'd never done it before won his first time out. So after that I Googled him and sure enough, it was all true. I found a lot of videos of him doing some pretty epic mountain bike riding on the Internets. He went back a year later and did it again, only this time on an electric bike. And he broke his previous record (still stands I believe). Guy Martin came and tried to win last year but he didn't bring his A game. He was in this video on the Roland Sands build of the Kurt Caselli memorial bike with Ivan Ramirez Carlin just won his class (pro moto ironman) a few weeks ago in the Baja 500 too. Total. Badass.
