  1. Is anyone planning to ride out this holiday weekend? I would be interested in hearing about it. Is there a ride going on in the high desert? I am bored out of my mind and may head out on my own. Nothing too crazy that I cant crawl to the roadside if I find trouble. Thinking about that Fish Creek ride later this month that I cant make and might head up there this weekend. Suggestions?

  2. Destination Mission Mountain Pass A 12 klm gravel switch-back that during the BC gold rush was quite famous and is still well worth the trip To get there there just follow the map to Seaton Portage . Beautiful lakes and and free camping, if you like to rough it. The whole area is fun for exploring with a lot of fairly well maintained forest service roads Our Vstroms had no trouble on the dry gravel roads. Be prepared, there are no gas stations or cell phone reception, back there your on your own. if you don't mind 12 hours in the saddle this is a fun day trip out of Vancouver, this 600 klm can be done,

  3. Hey everyone, I'm Harley from North Carolina. I come from the Harley Davidson world and really want to get into adventure riding. Currently I am looking at a 2007 R1200GS with 29,000 miles. The asking price for the bike is roughly around $9,000. What does everyone think? Is it a smart buy? And any other advice everyone is willing to give. Thanks, Harley

  6. I think my friend in AZ recently had an experience with the police for standing on the pegs while riding. His recant of the situation is far better than mine. I recall back in the '80's when I got my MC license, there was a test question about riding over road debris. Specifically , a loose muffler in the road and it was unavoidable. It suggested to stand on the pegs, ride over the debris, then pull over to inspect your bike. -- but that was many moons and beers ago. I tend to ride on the street and stand when I need to stretch, see over traffic, show my ass to the vehicle I just passed for being to damned slow, or see that road sign on the right that is partially blocked by cars. As I was recently bored, I tried to find it on various DMV sites... I cant find anything on a motorcycle test booklet that states 'do not stand up while riding'. but I didn't look in depth for it. I did find it odd that some law enforcement officials can tell you that it is illegal to stand while riding, the booklet tells you to 'rise up slightly', and we all know you stand on the pegs for various reasons. So long as I am not standing on the fuel tank (stunting), whats the big deal? Foremost Motorcycle insurance has this on their site: Hold onto the hand grips tightly. Keep a straight course. Rise up slightly on the foot pegs to absorb the shock. NY DMV section: Watch for uneven surfaces such as bumps, broken pavement, potholes, or small pieces of highway trash. Try to avoid obstacles by slowing or going around them. If you must go over the obstacle, first, determine if it is possible. Approach it at as close to a 90º angle as possible. Look where you want to go to control your path of travel. If you have to ride over the obstacle, you should: Slow down as much as possible before contact. Make sure the motorcycle is straight. Rise slightly off the seat with your weight on the footpegs to absorb the shock with your knees and elbows, and avoid being thrown off the motorcycle. Just before contact, roll on the throttle slightly to lighten the front end. If you ride over an object on the street, pull off the road and check your tires and rims for damage before riding any farther.

  8. Oh, Ok. I haven't been up that way in some time. I grew up in Portland Oregon and a favorite trip was up the Olympic peninsula, take the ferry to Victoria, then over the Vancouver and back down the 5. We have buds in Bellingham, so not too far away. I hope to get back up your way maybe this summer. Wife has an elderly dad in Portland, so when we get that far west, have to make the trek up to BC. Gorgeous place/area. Need my mountains fix!

  9. Just uploaded some pics to the Baja album. Yesterday was great. Lunch in Puerto Nuevo (lobster) then dirt trails out to la Bocana. Did a sweet stretch of beach then up a steep sandy hill. I was THAT close! Video Sunday. Dinner and massage at Coyote Cal's then today coastal diet south and found new trails. Flat tire in Colonet but right in front of a llanteria so got it fixed up right! Lunch in Colonet where we met these adv riders from Argentina and Spain on their way to Alaska. Marcelo and Fabian. Got to El Coyote now for a dip in the pool and a stogie

  10. Thanks for the post! Well the next time you are on your way to Tahoe with some time try 49 to Coloma to Marshall grade to George town out to Ice House rd back to 50. Great 2 lane road stuff out there. The key to soft terrain riding and stream crossings is to stand low and stay back on the bike as far as possible keeping the power on equal weight on the pegs. The V doesn't seem like it would lend itself to allow for deep stream crossings. My pic is a stream about 0.5 meter deep.
