  1. Dual Sport Rider from California. I ride a XR650L it does have a 6 gallon tank, I know small for an adventure bike but its big for a dual sport bike. I ride LA-Barstow to Vegas and the Cal Poly Penguin High Mountain Dual sport ride. I also own and run www.sirsquarters.com check it out if you have a chance. Let me know what you think.

  2. ROBDAY, I was on the longer, tougher, Dunderberg route last year. (Yellow 1200GSA) I got more than I bargained for and I am looking forward to a rematch. Count me in! With a short break built in, I could definitely ride further.

  3. You should totally head into 4 Corners, off 160, and check that out. Then take the 41/162 back into Utah and turn right on 261 and head up the Moki Dugway and camp at Muley Point.

  4. Hey folks! This is going to be fun, and for me it's even more fun because this area has been my summer stomping grounds since I was a toddler. As Eric mentioned, I'll be leading a very easy ride through the old mining districts. Lots of photo ops and historic stuff. Some shady stories, too... This loop does include Dunderberg Pass. However, the first section (Jordan Basin to Copper Mountain) can easily be skipped if nobody wants that kind of challenge. There is an easier way up to Copper Mountain, or we can just skip it altogether and go straight to Dunderberg from the Virginia Lakes road. I understand some riders had a tough time with the tricky section last year, and that's probably my fault for not explaining it better. Those are some tight, rocky switchbacks. Sorry to anyone who ended up on that section and was cursing my name... But it is worth it to go into that area. If the tough climb is out, we can go in from the other side, which is much easier. It depends on how long we want to be out riding (and what time we start). Cutting out this section can save us a big chunk of time. The rest of the route is easy, with an occasional moderate section. By moderate, I mean still relatively flat, but it might have a few rocks here and there, or a patch of sand. Not a long slog through a sand wash...just a sandy patch of road. This route will bring us into Bodie the back way. If we want to poke around Bodie and take pics, we may want to get an early start on this loop so we have plenty of time. Before Bodie, there are other places we'll be stopping for pics as well (Chemung Mine, Masonic, etc.) and a short little side trip to a cute little pond in the Dunderberg area if anyone is interested. This option has a bit of a challenge in that we might have to ride in a creekbed for 60-70 yards if the creek has washed over the trail. It's a beautiful spot, great for pics but not much else. This time of year, there will be little or no bugs. After Bodie, we'll come out Cottonwood Canyon to Hwy167 for a short distance, then off road again towards the banks of Mono Lake to DeChambeau Ranch. This place is set up like a museum. It served all of the mining communities back in the day with meat, produce, feed, lumber, etc. If we've kept up a decent pace to this point and have an hour or two left over, we can make the run up to Log Cabin Mine before heading back to camp. But I expect we'll already be running a bit late due to stops. But who knows? Best advice would be to get rolling early on this loop. That way we can decide on any or all options and still make it back before dark. Bring a camera...the photo ops will be amazing. Especially in the Conway Summit/Dunderberg/Green Creeks areas. Looking forward to this.

  7. Thanks Eric, I follow you on instagram and facebook also. Defiantly need to meet up and ride. You just need to be the first to do the whole Penguin ride on an adventure bike. Saw an 1190 at the start of the ride this year but never saw it after the start.

  8. Welcome! The "XL" isn't a specific criteria, just the idea that bigger bikes are purpose built for range and luggage and handle differently. I say it's generally 600+cc and maybe 400+lbs but there's no rule. I follow you on Instagram and have seen your FB posts quite a bit. Glad to have you here. We will have to get out and ride sometime soon. I also rode LAB2V but have yet to do that Penguins ride. Can you imagine a big bike falling off that teeter totter?

I've also got a profile on ADVRIDER.COM its ErickHunter and you can check out my instagram @erickbhunter - I got my first motorcycle, a 2014 BMW F700GS, just over a year ago and today I am embarking on my first big journey. Tonight I will be camping in the Delaware Water Gap aria of PA with some friends and then plan to head west solo from there. there will be a full ride report coming out in early june and a lot of pictures and hopefully some good video along the way! I am always excited to meet other riders so add me as a friend or follow along for the ride as you like. Thanks for reading and GET OUT THERE AND RIDE! P.S. I was stoked to find out the F700GS makes it into the category of "Big Bikes"

  12. This seems like it's shaping up to be quite a great movie about adventure riding on big bikes! I'm hosting a screening in Irvine on May 19th but you can check here for screenings near you. If you can't make it on this night then you can find the movie later at some point on Hulu, Netflix, etc... And while I set up the screening here in Irvine, I'll actually be watching it from Overland Expo at Mormon Lake, AZ

  13. Hey everyone, im new to the adventure riding group. Just got a Triumph Tiger 800 cx and im ready to do some on road/off road trips. I've been maping out routes already. Already had my first issue with the electrical system. My front turn signal light went out and it's almost impossible to get a replacement. I've been looking at getting the LED lights to replace it with. Lots of forums out there for this. Other than that, been riding just a little, because a soon as I got the bike the weather has been ridiculous. Crazy downpours nonstop. Oh well, I'll get out there one way or another. If anyone has any good trails to ride, or if they are going for a ride, i'm in virginia, so just give me a holler. I'll post some pics soon of my new, first ever, bike
