I know that there are no such things as the perfect motorcycle for everything but I believe that BMW was getting close with the 2017 Rallye. This bike is also referred to by those in the know as "the Frankenbike" because of the rider, Geoff Ballard who was responsible for putting it together and sending the plan to BMW. The Rallye is powered by the time-tested 1170cc ‘Wasserboxer’ air/liquid-cooled flat-twin DOHC powerplant that pumps out 125hp and drives through a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive single-sided swingarm (https://adbmag.com.au/editorial/adv-test-1000cc-adventure-bike-shootout/). The bike is further improved with the addition of Woody's Superlite and Superlaced Dakar wheels, Black Dog Cycle Works adventure pegs, Cyclops lighting, the AltRider lower bars and skid plate, and the MachineArtMoto cylinder head guards.
  3. This story by Mark Hinchliffe of Motorbike Writer and seems to affect all spoked wheel bikes made between Feb and June of this year (2018). This Australian rider had his front wheel collapse and send him to the hospital. I've seen rear wheel spokes fail but it's usually due to the rear brake caliper coming off and getting stuck in the wheel. Never seen this failure before. Another rider had an issue with 10 loose spokes on his rear wheel and lost control of the bike. Thankfully BMW seems to be on this issue from the start (unlike in the past) and has issued a service bulletin where riders can have their wheels inspected. I wonder what Woody of Woodys Wheel Works has to say about all this. He's been pretty critical of the oem mfg's materials and techniques over the years and has offered his expertise in-person only to have it mostly dismissed.

I lost my Goldwing in the Santa Rosa Fires and this is my replacement. I bought it used from a member here and I am very happy! There is something about the Boxter engine that just feels right. I do still look at the new Goldwing and the K1600 BMW, and the Triumph. Perhaps I need all of them?
  8. Anyone do there own wiring on aftermarket lights? I recently purchased a highly rated $25 set and wired them directly to my battery which I know was probably a bad idea as I could leave them on accidentally and drain the battery. It wasn’t 24 hrs later and I had done just that. I told a buddy of mine and he said he had done the same exact thing so brought his to the local mechanic to have installed. I’d prefer to save the $ and like tinkering on things like this. (Know how is king). So, anyone with a BMW R1200Gs circa 2006 model have a good “lead” on a hot wire that is easily accessible? I’m thinking the headlamp but would love to hear from someone that has already done it...THANKS in advance.
  9. For sale BRAND NEW, still in the plastic, never been opened AltRider skid plate and the mounting bracket; also BRAND NEW. Located in northern California, and would prefer a local sale, but I'm willing to ship them. I'm asking $450 or best offer for both, and I'm open to trades. I enjoy hunting, hiking, motorcycles (obviously), travel, and all sorts of stuff so let me know if you've got a good trade. Thanks for looking. http://www.altrider.com/en/product/detail/pid/2078 http://www.altrider.com/en/product/detail/pid/1382

Best motorcycle I've owned. Only drawback I've found is too many electronic gizmos. Don't get me wrong, the electronics are WONDERFUL but when they fail, you aren't left with many onsite repair options.

  12. Today I'm going to take my old and busted shocks off and replace with new ones! Joy! Seriously, this will take me probably more than a day and probably a six pack of beer for a friend to come help The rear shock is super easy but the front is tricky. You have to take the lower crashbars off and then raise the bike either with like a bucket under the skid plate or by lifting it from a cable/pulley from your garage ceiling. The trick is to get the telelever to fall far enough down to get the front shock out. Then reinstalling the crashbars is always fun I promise to post pics, bloody knuckles and all.
  13. Reports Record Sales for November and December, Steady Growth In Sluggish Market WOODCLIFF LAKE, NJ – January 11, 2018 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – BMW Motorrad reported sales of 13,546 motorcycles for 2017, down just 1.3% from the 13,730 motorcycles sold in 2016. However, despite the slight downturn, BMW outpaced the rest of the motorcycle industry (which was down 3.2%) and its relevant competition (which was down 6.3%). Sales of BMW motorcycles increased 37.3% in December 2017 (1,270 units) compared to December sales in 2016 (925 units), capping eight months of steady growth over the previous year in BMW Motorrad’s strongest export market. BMW Motorrad USA posted a 15% growth in sales from September through December compared to the same period in 2016, and showed a 27% growth in sales from November through December in 2017 compared to the previous year. “We are proud to report these impressive results despite current market conditions,” commented Michael Peyton, Vice President, BMW Motorrad North America. “BMW Motorrad USA achieved all-time record sales in November, while December 2017 was our best December since 2004 and our fourth consecutive month of sales growth.” According to Peyton, strong year-end results were driven by the ever-popular BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, which accounted for 15% of December sales volume. “New and loyal customers; the broadest model range in our history; and a strong and growing dealer network will continue to propel BMW motorcycle sales in the coming year,” he observed. BMW’s robust product offensive will continue in 2018 with the recent introduction of the new 215 hp BMW HP4 Race limited-volume, supersport motorcycle (BMW’s most-exclusive motorcycle ever offered), the 2018 BMW G 310 GS (BMW’s second entry in the smaller displacement segment), the 2018 BMW C evolution electric scooter, the 2018 BMW C 400 X (premium mid-sized scooter), the 2018 BMW K 1600 B Grand America, as well as several special-option motorcycles. BMW’s diverse range of adventure models, roadsters, sport bikes, tourers, and scooters can be seen and ridden at 153 U.S. retailers. Many new and updated BMW models are also currently making their debut at motorcycle shows around the country. For more information about BMW motorcycles and retailers, visit: www.bmwmotorcycles.com.
