  2. I got this info at AIMExpo and thought I'd share since MITAS is one of my favorite brands (E09 Dakar mostly) and people are always asking where to buy: Durelle Racing Elizabeth, CO durelleracing.com Motorace Wilbraham, MA motorace.com RawHyde Adventures Castaic, CA rawhyde-offroad.com Twisted Throttle Exeter, RI twistedthrottle.com K and J Racing Solutions Saint Amant, LA 225-315-3423 Treats HQ, Inc San Francisco, CA Treatland.tv
  3. I was at the KTM Rally a few weeks ago and snapped a pic of a new set of tires they are releasing for distribution soon, the Motoz "Tractionator Adventure" series (70/30; tubeless). This one pic alone got a reach of something like 17,000 on Facebook! I'm happy to announce that I'll be testing a set of these shortly on the XLADV project 990. I've seen their Tractionator Desert H/T tire and it is IMPRESSIVE! These are 100% natural rubber tires and are built to LAST longer and keep their grip even when worn down. Motoz is pronounced "moat-oz" with the "oz" referring to Australia, where the company is located. The tires are manufactured in Thailand, which is the #1 supplier of natural rubber. Got news today that Motoz has yet another new adventure tire they are releasing Spring '16 and can be seen next week at AIMExpo, booth #613. All I've been told is that it's a 50/50 tire and is also tubeless (can also take a tube if you like); also that 17" rears will also be available in 2016. Motoz is being distributed here in the US by Pacific Powersports of Temecula, CA. Behold, the "Adventure GPS" Which of these tires would you be most likely to try and for what type of riding?

Adapted from Adventuremotorcycle.com The VRM-401 is expected to be a 40% on 60% off road DOT adventure knobbie. This new tire will have wide deep tread blocks that should offer exceptional stability on sand, gravel and in light mud environments. The placement of intermediate blocks along the outer edges of the tire casing will increase stability and traction on pavement with less squirm in the twisties. The 401 also appears to feature a self-cleaning design for enhanced grip in all situations. Based on the popular adventure sizes that will be available, expect high load ratings suitable for 650cc-1200cc dual sport and adventure motorcycles. Motorace.com's eBay store shows the 150/70/18 rear for $159.99 and the 90/90/21 for $99.99. VeeRubber.com Available Sizes: 110/80-19 90/90-21 130/80-17 150/70-17 140/80-18 Other sizes to follow
  5. Tackee! It's like cheating! Pleased to announce a new sponsor for the 990: Vee Rubber This is a new tire, the VRM 401. It's a big bike adventure tire from a company with a rich heritage in off road already.
  6. Has anyone done this? Think it would cause problems at freeway speeds? 7. Double tube your tyres If your bike has inner tubes (rather than having a tubeless design), you can double tube your tyres. This is where you cut an old tube around the centre and wrap it around the outside of the inflated tube. This acts as an outer skin to protect your inner tube from punctures, something you don't want to be getting in the middle of the Sahara! You will also need to ensure the lock nut is screwed up against the valve cap to allow the tube to move inside the tyre. http://www.adventurebikerider.com/news/1071-7-tips-to-perfect-your-sand-riding-technique.html
  7. I figured now we have a bike, I'd put this thread here. What we have is a 2011 KTM 990 Adventure with just 3,000 miles! It's very clean and has never even been off road before. We hope to change that! My objective is to have a bike we can bring to all our regional events that can showcase some of the best the after market vendor world has to offer. It's purpose is to become a basis of discussion as to how these things make a difference in our riding. One of the reasons I picked a 990 is primarily because we couldn't get a new bike donated! It's also because there are a lot of people making stuff for the 990 and it has a lot of good real estate on which to put custom graphics wrap on. Besides, the 990 also happens to be a great bike in the dirt. It's also important to note here that none of this stuff is "free" that we're getting just because XLADV is so awesome. This bike came out of my pocket and most of the aftermarket parts are being provided at simply a discount. I'm happy to showcase these products and put sponsors' logos on the bike for their efforts. That's one thing I wanted XLADV to stand out for and that's a solid partnership with the v

Utilizing the latest in big block tire technology these adventure tires are ideal for situations where a rider spends 40% on-road and 60% off-road. 11. I saw a similar video for the Tenere 660 and since that bike isn't sold in the US and the GS/GSA is and have sold quite a few, I thought I'd do a similar video. The things I go over in this video really apply to just about any adventure bike. The key issue here for a lot of riders is what exactly do I need to do to my bike to outfit it for off-road riding? When I started out I had absolutely no clue and unfortunately wasted some time and even more money figuring all this out. I figure I can use my experience to save you money I have to say though that I honestly didn't know how much I'd enjoy riding my bike off-road when I first bought it. I figured it was just a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. However, these bikes don't exactly come dirt-ready off the showroom floor. There are some things you should do right away, some things before others given their importance and of course some things you really don't need to do. We've all seen that shiny sparkly bike at Starbucks all farkled up and you just know that thing has never seen anything more adventurous than a gutter in front of its driveway. Don't be that guy! The other thread here "Post your gear questions here" is more for the apparel side. This is the bike part of that same set of questions. I know it's long but if you're new to adventure riding or an experienced rider looking to explore more dirt, I think you'll find it helpful.

I love my BMW GS Adv. 'Nuff said. Best fun on two wheels since I had a sport bike. If anything my first thought when I bought it, as I rode away from the dealer, was "So THIS is what I'm missing out on."... Life is just different. And now my ZX10r sits in the garage, a proper race queen, having served me reliably for 27,000 miles... My GSA is not only my daily commute but my escape as well.
  13. Who's mixing what tire brands/models front and back? I know this is common for enduro dirt bike riders, but how about when you spend 50-60% of your time on the street? Any issues to consider there? What are your experiences in the quest to find good street manners and solid off-road traction? What witches brew combos have you tried that worked out well?

  15. Woody's Wheels are legendary. Isaac shows here why you'd want a set for your bike If you ride your big bike off road a lot and are tired of changing your tires from knobbies to road tires and back, it may be a good investment to get a second set of wheels. Besides, they are lighter and stronger than your OEM rims and will stand up to the abuse. I have run a set of them for about three years now. No complaints

Great ride. Had a 2012 road that I started with and upgraded when I found a deal on a used XC. Larger front wheel and better suspension were huge. That said, the the stock suspension sucks for someone bigger than average. With some upgrades it has been a great dual sport and tourer.
